Plan B: I set aside the aging Core2Quad and got something a tad nicer.

i7-6700K 4.0GHz (to start)
ASUS Maximus VIII Formula motherboard
G. SKILL Ripjaws V 32GB 3200MHz RAM
SAMSUNG EVO 850 500GB and 250GB SSD
SEAGATE Barracuda 2 x 1TD HDD
HITACHI Deskstar 500GB HDD
EVGA GTX560TI and GTX280 video cards
EVGA Supernova 850W G2 PSU
Corsair Obsidian 750D case
EK liquid cooling

Now I have to put the guts inside.

Pretty impressive Robert, I myself should be upgrading to an I7-6700K, by the end of the year. I would be interested in seeing your CFG file with this machine along with some performance numbers.

I'll do what I can Frank. Took me a while to figure how to install win10-64 from usb. LOL

Win 10 is up, doing the updates. I have to get my butt back outside to finish my fence. :(

Wow with all that stuff going on, your computer is going to be out of date before you get to finish it up. :P

I'll be impressed when I'll be running at 5.0GHz without effort. For the time being I'm letting it run at 4.2GHz. I found the i7-6700K was the best bang for the buck when I was shopping. It reminds me of my old Q6600, a "supposedly" strong CPU that can run decent and can be overclocked for future growth.

By CONFIG file, you mean all the tweaks in the BIOS?

I can't stress how quiet the PC is now running, even with:
- two 140mm fans IN at the front
- one 120mm fan IN under the water pump
- one 140mm fan OUT at the rear
- three 120mm fans OUT on the radiator at the top
- and the PSU fan.

Filters at the front and under the PSU, nice.

Oh forgot, Bell called and offerred an upgrade for an extra $5; 25 download and 25 upload. I had 5 download and less than 1 upload, I just couldn't say no. It's freaking awesome.

Frank, ASUS has a Suite for the Maximus VIII Formula board. It has decent reviews and comments so I used it to overclock.

It slowly increases and does a stress test:

Mine went up to 4.7GHz without doing anything:

You can do a bench test and compare it with others on a forum:

4.7GHz without doing any delicate tweaking. I'm sure I can get to 5.0GHz but I have other priorities for the time being.

I am talking about your Flightsim Config file and those are some awesome specs

Oh, I'm still a bit far from flying. :( So much things to finish up before snow, but I can only do a few hours of manual labour in a day. And then I have to take a day off every once in a while, I can no longer do a full day of work. Right now I'm finishing up a fence; took me practically a month (I could have done this in 3 days back in 2000).

Another nice feature, you can set priorities so FS-X runs ahead of other apps. I used an external program for this before, no longer need to now.

Here you go.

This is my final tweaked FSX.CFG file for triple screens.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/sq4m2stx15uc7ed/fsx%20final%20settings.CFG?dl=0

EDIT: After more testing with 6 displays, I've bumped up framerate lock in FSX to 35. It seems to give a bit more room for drops in busy areas like airports.

Impressions after some testing on triple monitors:

HITACHI Deskstar 500GB HDD
EVGA GTX560TI and GTX280 video cards

Turns out Plan B was the correct answer. I settled on the CPU at 4.2 GHz and the RAM at 3200 MHz; not as high as I wanted, but the PC performs nicely with little heat and extra current.

Both cards got upgraded to GTX 950; not much more powerful, but they use current technological advancements and require a lot less power (that GTX 280 was a hog).

I am impressed with all the new parts. The Obsidian 750D case has a bigger brother today (more expensive), but does a remarkable job at airflow and room for the triple radiator at the top.

iRacing runs easily at high settings, and FSX can nearly max out everything.

Wished I could have afforded the bigger brother CPU and GPUs, but hey, such is life.

So why do they call it a stress test?

Cause I was shitting bricks watching the temps climb higher and higher with RealBench.

Had a slight 3 second stutter over Mount Royal, not sure why.

Love the real estate, hate having to reach for the mouse and keyboard, even if they are lit up now. Gotta get some control boxes like the rich boys have. :D

I use the "rogerdoger" keyboard mod myself. Not as high tech but way cheaper.
A couple of years ago I build myself the "DIY Triple Screen Flight deck" and I love it.
Added a fourth monitor over the top keyboard so I can see maps, weather program, approach plates etc.

Took a demo with only the liquid cooling running on the new gamer. Figured it was best to test it before cramming everything in. Of course I forgot to take a video once completed.

I did get myself 2 leather seats from an Acura RSX, so comfy. Now I just have to build a new setup; running on this standard wooden desk is just not practical.

Custom liquid cooling (only CPU and motherboard in my case) may be expensive compared to the All-In-One systems, but it sure is nice to have things just the way you like it.
