CPU O/C at 4.5 GHz, RAM O/C at 3200 MHz, an extra 20 fps:

Price paid is a cpu that no longer cools down to 20C at idle, it's at least at 30C now. Flying in the thunderstorm at low altitude runs in the mid 50s.

(Yeah yeah, I labelled the image wrong :P )

Left scenery and autogen at max.

CPU O/C at 4.2 GHz, RAM O/C at 2133 MHz, back to same fps as before:

Big difference in temps; idle was back at 20C with reduced voltage, working spiked at 50C.

CPU load spiked at 100%, GPU barely worked a sweat. In the long term, under these conditions, I'm not comfortable running that extra current and adding extra heat in the CPU and motherboard.

I've been running on air before and not sure what "normal" temps really are with liquid cooling. This cpu is rated at 91W TDP, it spiked under 50C. I might be worried for nothing.

Tweaked the FSX settings a bit. Figured I might as well put a few cars in at 5%, lowered boats to 15% and lowered scenery complexity and autogen one click.

CPU is still at 4.2 GHz, RAM got bumped to 3200 MHz.

Started with same flight 2000ft over NYC in a thunderstorm, 2D cockpit, all panels overlayed.

TEST 1, Single Acer x223w 22" monitor, 1680x1050x32:

Pretty much same old 45-64 fps, temps under 50C, CPU at 100%, GPU at 59% usage, maxxed at 47C and 61% power.


TEST 2, Matrox TripleHead2Go, triple Acer x223w 22" monitors, 5040x1050x32, 2D cockpit with all panels overlayed:

As I expected, 18-20fps.

Motherboard and CPU temps are similar.
CPU clocks did not go up as much, surprised.
CPU utilization remained similar.
20% drop on the CPU package, unexpected as well.

GPU max temp increased to 58C.
Power increased nearly to 66%.
GPU utilization dropped, also unexpected.
GPU memory usage nearly doubled, but still under 50%.

Frames took a nose dive, but the image remained surprisingly smooth. 2D panels on a triple screen setup just doesn't work well (without major panel resizing, huge pain). But this was not the real test, I will use the TH2G for front view only, instruments will go on output video outputs.


TEST 3, removed all 2D panels:

15-86fps, much better. The range surprised me, but the image is still as smooth as with a single monitor.

Motherboard and CPU temps remained similar.
CPU clocks increased a bit on only the last core.
CPU utilization remains pretty much maxxed out (except for core 0, I must need tweaking there).
GPU temps maxxed at 68C (fan turned on).
Power jumped to 108%.
GPU memory usage still under 50%.
GPU utilization maxxed out at 99%.

And this is most likely as good as it's going to get with a GTX 950 on a TH2G and triple monitors. I somewhat expect to have to drop scenery complexity and autogen another click when going online on a busy sky.

So a nagging voice was telling me to go on and test 2D panels on the triple monitors. I looked around, it wasn't the wife, so I kept on trucking.

TEST 4:

FPS went through the roof, 100-125fps at first, then 100-155fps on a 2nd test to get the screen shot.

Compared to using a single monitor in test 1:

Motherboard:
- temps were practically identical.

CPU:
- required 0.020 less volts.
- temps were practically identical.
- power consumption dropped from 49W to 37W,
- turbo mode did not engage, clocks remained at 4000 MHz.
- utilization on cores 3 and 4 dropped considerably.

GPU:
- voltage dropped 0.012 volts.
- temps rose from 47C to 66C.
- fans had to turn on at 31%.
- power consumption rose from 61% to 83%.
- utilization rose from 59% to 99%.
- memory rose from 27% to 40%.

Considering triple the monitor real estate, these increases are negligible.


Compared to triple monitors without any 2D panels at low altitude in test 3:

Motherboard:
- temps were marginally lower.

CPU:
- required 0.005 more volts.
- temps were practically identical.
- power consumption dropped from 42W to 37W,
- turbo mode did not engage, clocks remained at 4000 MHz.
- utilization on cores 3 and 4 dropped considerably.

GPU:
- voltage dropped 0.012 volts.
- temps dropped from 68C to 66C.
- fans slowed from 40% to 31%.
- power consumption dropped from 108% to 83%.
- utilization remained the same at 99%.
- memory dropped from 43% to 40%.

Ground textures must be the killer. Going for a low altitude test.

- temps rose slightly and barely cracked 50C for first time.
- power consumption rose from 37W to 42W,
- turbo mode engaged on first two cores.
- utilization hit 100% on all cores except core 0 (again for some reason).

GPU:
- voltage remained unchanged at 1.000 volts.
- temps rose slightly from 66C to 69C.
- fans rose from 31% to 39%.
- power consumption rose from 83% to 113%.
- utilization maxxed from 99% to 100%.
- memory barely increased from 40% to 41%.

So weather did add a load on both the CPU and GPU. I was surprised to see a view with such low visibility require more resources from both the CPU and GPU. I expected it to be the opposite; ground textures is not the ultimate fps killer.

Might as well compare to low altitude and thunderstorms to get a complete picture, so I dropped to 2000 feet.

- temps remained relatively the same and barely cracked 50C.
- power consumption rose from 42W to 43W,
- turbo mode engaged on first three cores.
- utilization hit 100% on all cores except core 0.

GPU:
- voltage remained unchanged at 1.000 volts.
- temps remained unchanged at 69C.
- fans rose from 39% to 41%.
- power consumption remained at 113%.
- utilization remained at 100%.
- memory barely increased from 41% to 42%.

Ground textures had a negligible effect in a thunderstorm. Surprised yet again, I was sure it was going to add a respectable load on the CPU.

One issue that kept popping up in Nick's guide was to lock framerates in FSX at 30. I always wondered just what exactly was the impact of doing that tweak.

Test 6, framerate locked at 30 in FSX:

In-game fps stopped jumping radically and settled at 29-30, image was smooth and solid.

Compared to unlocked framerate in test 6:

Motherboard:
- temps remained unchanged.

CPU:
- voltage dropped from 1.366 to 1.327 volts.
- temps remained relatively the same and barely cracked 50C.
- power consumption dropped from 43W to 38W,
- turbo mode engaged on only two cores instead of three.
- utilization hit 100% on only one core instead of three.

GPU:
- voltage remained unchanged at 1.000 volts.
- temps dropped from 69C to 67C.
- fans dropped from 41% to 35%.
- power consumption dropped from 113% to 106%.
- utilization dropped from 100% to 78%.
- memory dropped from 42% to 39%.

Wow, a pleasant surprise. The effect of locking the framerate at 30 impacts both the CPU and GPU in a significant way. It's not radical, but definitely not negligible.

What does these lower temps and power consumption readings mean for you?

1. Your CPU and GPU as well as all related components will heat less = increased life expectancy.

2. The CPU and GPU now have room for additional loads. This equates to a lower risk of a framerate drop in busy skies or when the loads increase for other reasons (textures, weather, etc).

Until I get a stand, figured I could take it up a notch and added another monitor on the same video card (couldn't add the two others even if I had room on my desk, I can't find my VGA-DVI adapters).

Test 8, added Acer x183h 18.5" monitor, 1366x768x32, on 2nd DVI output:

Same appearance, 29-30 fps.

Compared to locked framerate in test 7:

Motherboard:
- temps remained unchanged.

CPU:
- voltage increased from 1.327 to 1.365 volts.
- temps remained relatively the same and barely cracked 50C.
- power consumption increased from 38W to 44W,
- turbo mode engaged on all cores instead of three.
- utilization hit 100% on three cores instead of one.

GPU:
- voltage increased from 1.000 to 1.012 volts.
- temps increased from 67C to 68C.
- fans increased from 35% to 40%.
- power consumption dropped from 106% to 101%.
- utilization increased from 78% to 79%.
- bus interface doubled from 11% to 24%.
- memory increased from 39% to 50%.

Overall not bad, considering I always had a front view on 2D cockpit. I minimized it to a tiny window, but still, it wasted resources. And I had the instrument panels painted over the triple display view, and not on separate monitors on a separate video card. I also pushed the system a lot further, flying the plane from 2000 feet up to 15000 feet, and back down to a local airport.

But interface doubled to 24%, looks promising to add a 2nd video card. If the PCI-E bus drops from X16 to X8, that's a 50% drop. If I used 24% of the bus interface, technically I could double that and still have some room to spare (in my pink sky universe).

Found my VGA-DVI adapters, couldn't resist jamming a 5th monitor on the desk to see the impact of PCI-E 3.0 falling from X16 down to X8. Still have to go buy a VGA-DVI cable for that last monitor.

Again, I took the jet through its paces; climbing from 2000 feet up to 20,000 feet, cruised to Montreal and landed.

Test 9,
- lower center Acer x183h 18.5" monitor, 1366x768x32, now alone on top GTX 950.
- moved TH2G 5040x1050x32 down to 2nd GTX 950.
- added the old GTX 560 TI on bottom PCI-E 3.0x1 slot.
- added lower left Acer x183h 18.5" monitor, 1366x768x32, on GTX 560 TI.


If I read the specs right, I can have 4 displays on each GTX 950 and 2 displays on the 560, for a total of 10 possible display (found some nice 22" on Kijiji for $70). I'm gonna need a bigger power bar.

I had Navigraph running on the lower left display, but I doubt it had much impact.

Same appearance, 29-30 fps. Note that the actual 2D cockpit front view is minimized to a tiny window. I've opened a separate window for that outside airplane view (can't see the top 3 monitors properly, so I used that to land).


Compared to four monitors in test 8:

Motherboard:
- temps increased from 36C to 43C.

CPU:
- voltage dropped from 1.365 to 1.359 volts.
- temps for all four cores now in lower mid-50C.
- power consumption increased from 44W to 47W,
- I noticed DRAM decreased from 4.93W to 4.00W.
- turbo mode still engaged on all cores.
- utilization hit 100% on three cores again.

GPU 1: single 18.5" monitor, PCI-E 3.0x8
- voltage remained at 1.012 volts.
- temps dropped from 68C to 64C.
- fans increased from 40% to 28%.
- power consumption dropped from 101% to 32%.
- graphic clock dropped from 1405 MHz to 1139 MHz.
- utilization dropped from 79% to 34%.
- bus interface increased slightly from 24% to 26%.
- memory dropped from 50% to 29%.

GPU 2: triple 22" monitors, PCI-E 3.0x8
- voltage at 1.025 volts.
- temps at 68C.
- fans at 44%.
- power consumption at 50%.
- graphic clock at 1278 MHz.
- utilization at 42%.
- bus interface at 20%.
- memory at 31%.

GPU 3: single 18.5" monitor, PCI-E 3.0x1
- temps at 58C.
- fans at 34%.
- utilization at 26%.
- bus interface at 22%.
- memory at 16%.

Leaving the triple monitors on a single GTX 950 seemed to have lowered the load on that card. I might not add extra monitors to that card to leave room for additional "surprise" loads.

The 18.5" monitors barely give the GTX 950 and GTX 560 TI a workout.

Surprisingly, using the 2nd PCI-E slot and lowering the speed from X16 down to X8 did not have a great impact on this setup.

The extra monitors are making the CPU heat just a bit more with that extra current. But at 47 watts, that's still 50% of the 95 watt rating. All in all, it seems this should run a few more displays without much trouble.

I doubt applications like FSinn, CVacars, FS Commander, etc, will have any significant impact either. They had little if no impact on the old Q6600 core-2-quad.

Just got back with a new VGA cable and reflew the same flight with a third Acer 18" monitor. Except this time I had loaded REX Essential Plus weather textures, nicer clouds but I'd have to tweak the distribution; no clouds above 15,000 feet or so and large clear patches below me despite Heavy Thunderstorms selected.

Test 10:
- added 6th monitor on GTX 560 TI.
- used REX Essential Plus cloud textures.
- locked framerate in FSX at 35 to see how things went.

Compared to five monitors in test 9:

Motherboard:
- temps remained at 43C.

CPU:
- voltage increased slightly from 1.359 to 1.360 volts.
- temps on two cores increased 1C but all between 50-56C.
- power consumption increased from 47W to 48W,
- DRAM increased from 4.00W to 4.08W.
- turbo mode still engaged on all cores.
- utilization hit 100% on three cores but decreased slightly on core 0.

GPU 1: single 18.5" monitor, PCI-E 3.0x8
- voltage remained at 1.012 volts.
- temps remained at 64C.
- fans increased slightly from 28% to 29%.
- power consumption remained at 32%.
- graphic clock remained at 1139 MHz.
- utilization increased from 34% to 50%.
- bus interface decreased slightly from 26% to 25%.
- memory decreased slightly from 29% to 24%.

GPU 2: triple 22" monitors, PCI-E 3.0x8
- voltage remained at 1.025 volts.
- temps increased from 68C to 75C.
- fans increased from 44% to 62%.
- power consumption increased from 50% to 68%.
- graphic clock increased slightly from 1278 to 1392 MHz.
- utilization increased slightly from 42% to 49%.
- bus interface increased slightly from 20% to 27%.
- memory decreased slightly from 31% to 26%.

GPU 3: dual 18.5" monitors, PCI-E 3.0x1
- temps increased slightly from 58C to 59C.
- fans remained at 34%.
- utilization jumped up from 26% to 86%.
- bus interface jumped up from 22% to 66%.
- memory increased slightly from 16% to 17%.

I'm impressed, the two 18" monitors on the bottom PCI-E 3 slot runs at X1 and still are not maxxed out on a GTX 560 TI.

The top and middle GPUs had additional load, not surprised using the better textures from REX, but remain stable with room to spare. Oddly enough they used less memory, go figure.

I'd have 3 for the price of 1 new one, and supposedly the guy lets you test them.
