With a desktop, you can pick your individual components to ensure the best mix of quality versus price. I would never buy a pre-built desktop anymore. With windows 7, setting up a brand new build is so easy. A computer is only as good as the sum of its components.

Yep, now that I've built two, I'll never do it any other way. Hundreds of options and no proprietary crap.

You did not tell us what company makes this desktop.

I would go for 16 GB ram and you did not mention how much video ram but I would go for 2 GB video ram.

I was planning to buy the components and assemble them myself. This way I can get a good balance between quality and value, just as cva3906 said.

The Nvidia card I mentioned has 1GB of memory, but I can always upgrade If I want/need too. Same goes for the RAM. Plus, If I build a desktop, I can gradually upgrade the components as necessary, like adding an SSD when my budget allows, instead of buying a whole new laptop.

Barry, could you please tell me what specs you have on your self build, are they similar to the ones I listed?

Ryan

But, there's something you can try:

http://vistasupport.mvps.org/repair_a_vista_installation_using_the_upgrade_option_of_the_vista_dvd.htm

By reinstalling using the UPGRADE option, you get a fresh, fixed copy of windows but all your installed programs, user settings and files will remain.

As for a disc, search for a torrent of your version of vista and download it. Burn it up and follow the directions in the link supplied.

It's worth a shot, brother!

Good luck.

Keith,

I have extra copy of Vista Ultimate Upgrade 32 bit and I tried to install into dying laptop. Here is result:
