Hi Barry, I'm not sure on this but can't you set the default sound devices within FSX itself under "Settings>other settings>Sound"?

Depending on audio cards (add-on and built-in), there is a setting to auto-mute speakers when a headphone is detected on the front jack. This should be in audio settings, somewhere.
If you update your audio driver (possibly automatically using windows update), this setting may be changed, sometimes.
Of course I can't find it on mine right now to show you.
