How long does it take before I "emulate Air Florida and go swimming in the Potomac River" in a Level-D 767 at FL360 without any anti-ice activated?

Just like in the Mayday episodes, it seems my dive into the Atlantic last night may have been caused by more than one reason. This was the first flight since I disabled weather in FSinn and had more realistic temperatures up there. I sure had a great climb, thrust was awesome.

Is it the pitot tube that's first to go? Loss of lift on the wings? I don't think engines would suffer.

That was going to be my 1st suggestion in the other thread.
I would say that 100% of my crashes from cruising altitude were as a result of not turning on pitot tube heat.
(all except for the one where I simply ran out of fuel) :P

Turn your pitot tube heaters on usually when you start to taxi (not before or you risk melting them).
Engine and wing anti-ice need to be turned on only when required:
- Is it below freezing on the ground and there is snow/sleet/freezing rain etc?
- Are you climbing/cruising and your TAT is below freezing and you are going through mist/cloud?

I'm sure there are more times when you want these things on.. but that is my rules of thumb.
