Check this out. A quad Q6600 2.6GHz 4GB DDR2 that can be overclocked.

My specific question is, which CPU and RAM would I need to improve on this? And how much would it cost?

Thanks guys

You need to know the exact model number for the CPU and the motherboard, and the stepping of the processor.

With that you can know if it is one of the problem batches that won't reach 3.0GHz.

This is what I have:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 - 2.40GHz, 8MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB, Kentsfield, Quad-Core, OEM
MPN: HH80562PH0568M (I have the G0 stepping version)

EVGA nForce 680i SLI Motherboard - T1 Version
MPN: 122-CK-NF68-T1

"Great Processor, was able to overclock frontside bus to 1333 for a 25% increase on stock voltages and heatsink. Much higher over clocking is easily achieved with aftermarket cooling, Make sure you get the G0 stepping version the older steppings do not over clock as well. "

Ok, check out post #6:

Quote:
Dude the stock heatsink is totally fine if you're only going to hit 3ghz. Any higher and you'll definately need better cooling, but back before I had my Scythe, my highest stable 24/7 OC with the stock Intel HSF was 3.2Ghz. Anything over that, I had to throw my Tornado fan on the HSF, which was insanely loud. Most people don't even try out the stock Intel HSF and just assume it can barely handle the Q at stock speeds, which couldn't be further from the truth.

The G0 is good upto 71c. As long as you stay under that, then you're fine. If I were you I'd definately get better cooling so you can crank that Quad up there with the big fellas. It can definately do it. With a Scythe infinity, Thermalright Ultra 120E or a Tunique Tower, you'll be able to get a 24/7 OC of 3.6ghz easy, as long as you have a chip that allows it. Chances are, if you have a G0, the sweet spot will be 3.6.

Now check this pic I took back in July 2009 exactly one year after I had built the gamer:

Image

Now this was with this air cooler:

http://techgage.com/article/ultra_chilltec_cpu_cooler/

Excess heat and insufficient voltage are the main causes of unstable CPUs. I'm running a PowerUp GEN-6803 800-Watt Power Supply, that should be more than enough for this configuration:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applica....EN-6803

It was unstable past 2.9GHz, that's why I'm running at 2.7 now. But can you imagine what liquid cooling could do to this puppy?

I also have to cool the north bridge. The south bridge does not get very hot, some say to use the stock heatsink from the north and put that one the south, and then get a beefy cooler for the north.

Went through old links, found this one about FSB holes:

Someone from a racing forum had this extra northbridge cooler lying around. I'm hoping he still has it, he was letting it go for $20 shipped.

I can even add a fan on that but he says he never bothered in his builds.

Holy crap, in case you're wondering what your CPU can do and how far a PSU can go, check this guy:

just a comparison, i'm running a 850watt enermax galaxy psu and i have the following,

q6600
9800GTX
4 sticks of ddr2
2 dvd burners
4 hdd's (3 normal 1 ssd)
27 fans (18 high speed yates, and 2 fans for my lcd)
2 mcp655's.

so i would think a 1000w of good quality could handle your setup fine.

Good thing you have a 780i, this is the reply I got from one liquid cooling supplier concerning my Q6600 cpu, 9600GT gpu and 680i mobo:

Dear Robert,
The 680i does get really hot. Since its kind of an old board now I don't believe we have anything that will work for it any longer.
For the CPU the Apogee XT is the best block that Petra's currently stocks. We will also be adding EK's Supreme HF shortly as well as the Rasa from XSPC, if you prefer their block style.

Robert, in January Sidewinder Computers merged with Petra's tech shop. Sidewinder has some technical support capabilities that you may be interested in, but both your board and video cards may be out of date. The MCW80 is the only GPU block that comes to mind that may work for those video cards, with the proper mounting hardware.
If you would like to email john@sidewindercomputers.com, he may be able to give you some additional suggestions.

Best Regards
Gary Stofer

I picked up a different unit.

600w PSU; nVidia 8800GT 512; 8GB DDR2; and a E8500 core 2 duo at 3.16GHz. All on a XFX nForce mobo 780i. W7ultimate.

kijiji link

With this mobo, I can OC, but first I need to get it running. It all works and it's now all clean but although the DVD player will read CDs, it will not read my FSX DVD. Anyone suggest why? Device Driver says it's working.

can see CD images in it, and play movies too. But no FSX.

:wow: ???

I found a discussion about how some DVD players cannot read some disks. I have to use a program to make a virtual DVD on a memory stick and use it like a DVD. I guess I have to try it.

I suppose you have the latest drivers with that version of Windows.

Maybe cleaning it? I have one of those CDs with a little hair thingy, works ok.

First time I hear that one though, how about using an old DVD instead until you can buy a new one (they cost practically nothing now)?

Tell me about it.

I'm working on something like this:

I just have to research if my design and part choice is ok. I'm planning on getting the CPU and bridges cooled first, then cool the GPUs later.

I have some more reading to do, people are mentionning other components on the motherboard that get hot.

Rob, if you ever get into water cooling, be prepared to part with a lot of money. I have a shopping cart over at NCIX that is topping out at $702. lol

It's evolved to this inline configuration overnight after a lot of reading; dual pump, dual rad, cpu, northbridge, southbridge and 2 x gpu. I still have to research an equivalent waterblock for the voltage regulator portion of the 680i. Still not sure how that attaches, I assume same way the current fins are attached, most likely with special tape or epoxy.

Liquid cooling is now an art form, there's mucho expensive gaming rigs out there on the forums.
