I am running Windows 8.1 and running P3D_v2_Academic_2.1.9936.0 . I had to find and download the FSUIPC for P3d at this site http://forum.simflight.com/topic/66139-updated-modules/
and then I copied and pasted the FSX.EXE file from FSX into P3D main folder as well as the UIAutomationCore.dll file , this helps with the Joystick disappearance problem. One other thing you can do is go to your Control Panel System Device manager and click on all the USB devices and set the power management to not allow devices to turn off to save power.
Squawkbox 4 will work fine in P3D but the Transponder window will not show , fix for this is to find the DLL.XML file which is located in C:\users\your name\AppData\Roaming\Martin Lockheed\Prepar3D/DLL.XML and add these lines to it . After you do the below save this file someplace in case you ever have to reinstall P3D. OH NOTE:: if you ever want to reinstall P3D to make a clean install make sure you run the Setup and select uninstall, this way the registration will be wiped out and you can re enter it when you have done the install again , if you just remove it from Program files and delete the files you will not be able to re activate it .(Unless you contact Lockheed Martin)
<Launch.Addon>
<Name>SquawkBox Transponder</Name>
<Disabled>False</Disabled>
<ManualLoad>False</ManualLoad>
<Path>C:\Program Files (x86)\SquawkBox\sbtrans10.dll</Path>
</Launch.Addon>
It should look like this when your done .
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="Windows-1252"?>

<SimBase.Document Type="Launch" version="1,0">
<Descr>Launch</Descr>
<Filename>dll.xml</Filename>
<Disabled>False</Disabled>
<Launch.ManualLoad>False</Launch.ManualLoad>
<Launch.Addon>
<Name>IvAp</Name>
<Disabled>False</Disabled>
<Path>C:\Program Files (x86)\IVAO\IvAp v2\ivap_fsx_bootstrap.dll</Path>
<Commandline></Commandline>
</Launch.Addon>
<Launch.Addon>
<Name>SquawkBox Transponder</Name>
<Disabled>False</Disabled>
<ManualLoad>False</ManualLoad>
<Path>C:\Program Files (x86)\SquawkBox\sbtrans10.dll</Path>
</Launch.Addon>
<Launch.Addon>
<Name>SquawkBox AI Control</Name>
<Disabled>False</Disabled>
<ManualLoad>False</ManualLoad>
<Path>C:\Program Files (x86)\SquawkBox\sbaicontrol10.dll</Path>
</Launch.Addon>
<Launch.Addon>
<Name>SquawkBox Internal Version</Name>
<Disabled>False</Disabled>
<ManualLoad>False</ManualLoad>
<Path>C:\Program Files (x86)\SquawkBox\sbmod10.dll</Path>
</Launch.Addon>
<Launch.Addon>
<Name>FSUIPC 4</Name>
<Disabled>False</Disabled>
<Path>Modules\FSUIPC4.dll</Path>
</Launch.Addon>
</SimBase.Document>
There are additional patches available at the Martin Lockheed website for various other small problems but as for now it is working great for me .
Note about the weather using Squawkbox, on Vatsim, it does not update as it does in FSX but I have found flying on IVAO the weather is bang on and updates great..
Hope this is a help. P3D is good ..and works on W8 and W8.1 Running Gigabyte Z77 with Intel i5 Cpu 8 g of ram and GeForce Nvieia 640 Video card 2g .
