Hi all, I've been a member of CVA for a long time but I've been inactive for a number years. I was hoping to enlist someone's help to get me up and running with FSX on my new system. When I tried to reinstall FSX it turns out that a file on my second DVD is corrupted and can not be read. I was wondering if someone can put this file somewhere for me to download?

The file in question is D2Feat~9.cab and it is about 140MB. If you 1) have the file, 2) are willing to help me out and 3) have an online storage location we can share files on can you send me a message with the information. If you can do 1 and 2 but not 3 let me know and I will get access to an FTP site that we can use for the transfer.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Virtually ground bound,
James CVA9292

Hi James, I don't see you listed on the pilot list. If you want to file pireps with CVA now, you have to re-register and use the very simple CVAcars software. There's a forum about it called FSAcars Support or something (FSAcars was used before CVAcars).

You probably already know about VATSIM.

All the software you need will be available in your pilot space when you register.

If no one has any way to send those files to you, I can help you with them if you get an FTP site set up. What a drag. Are you sure the DVD is not all compressed?

cheers

Yes, I see the site has changed quite a bit since the last time I checked it out. I haven't been flying online in quite some time and I haven't recreated my my cva9292 call sign (have I lost my stats now?? Don't answer if it's in the FAQ, I'll check it out). I do have a vatsim account too, I'll have to resurrect that when I do get back into flying online...

Anyway, it's academic if I can't find that file. If you able to help out that would be great. I have an ftp site you can try to upload to. It's been a bit flaky in the past so if it doesn't work in a reasonable amount of time feel free to give up and let me know.

ftp://ftp-upload:cttup@ftp.icescape.com

I've embeded the username and password in the link above (should should just be able to paste the link into an explorer window and drop in the file) but I'll reprint them here if it is not clear.
username: ftp-upload
password: cttup

Thanks for taking the time. I appreciate you offering to help. If the ftp doesn't work we could try google docs or windows live mesh but I'll cross that bridge later...

James - I see a D2Feat~9.cab on DVD 2, but note that it is 70 MB.

I tried to upload it but I don't know how to "drop in" the file. I'm not much of a techie. I logged in and tried from the ftp prog in the command prompt window too. No luck with the "put" command.

If it's a legitimately purchased FSX cd, could Microsoft not help?

Cheers Bill

Try this...don't click on the link. Copy and paste it into an explorer window (ie the file viewer, you can do Start->Run 'Explorer') to get it loaded easily. If you feel like giving it another try, thanks!

Bill, yes this is a legitimate copy, however, have you ever dealt with Microsoft consumer report for a 4 year old product. :) I'll be waiting a good long time for a new DVD. I'll go out and buy another copy before that!

Thanks again for the help.

No, I've never had any dealings with Microsoft. Was just a suggestion - nothing more.

Cheers Bill

Put it this way, my FS9 CD exploded when I dropped it on the floor. I figured it was easier to just buy FSX than deal with MS support from everything I've read about them.

I did that too. I had no trouble getting on the site, but don't see any way to upload the file. Drag and Drop? Right click? Nothing works.

I did this.....
To view this FTP site in Windows Explorer, click Page, and then click Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer.
....but got an error message when I dragged the file over (even though it at least provided a "copy" icon and started to download). It was the same error mesage I got when I first logged on

Rob, it seems you've already gone above and beyond the call of duty here...I don't know what is up with that ftp site, it has always been flaky. Seems you've done as much with it as you can. If you are still willing, I've created another option. I created an account with this site:

https://www.yousendit.com/

You can use it to send the file. I believe you just need to use my email address:

jryden at gmail dot com (fixing it up obviously)

If you just want to say 'screw this guy!' I'll understand :)

If this one doesn't work...I'll start smashing my kids piggy banks...they'll understand I'm sure. :?

It's sending now. I had to create an account to but that's no problem.

If this doesn't solve your problem, I bet you can get a used copy of FSX for $40. I did a couple of years ago and have had nothing but pleasure from it (and lots of tweaking of course). The $40 was only a small part, of course, of the overall cost of computer and video card and all the time needed to learn how to tweak the system.

Enjoy!
