Shalom and greetings all my pals,

After watching NWT ICE PILOTS tv show. I am motivated to do Buffalo Airways' world famous flagship route from CYZF Yellowknife airport to CYHY Hay River/Merlyn Carter Airport located 2 miles north of Hay River, Northwest Territories, Canada.

Finished boarded with passengers

Image

Waiting for CYZF airport control tower to issue clearance for engine start and taxi to short of runway 16 (DC-3 does not use pushback)

Image

Engines started and now ready for u-turn to taxi to short of runway 16 via taxiway H

Taxiing to short of runway 16

Holding short of runway 16 awaiting for take off clearance while another propeller plane in background sky annoyed VATCAN controller by taking off without clearance

Image

Cruising at 10,000 ft (you cannot go over 10,000 ft because of lack of oxygen and DC-3 is not all pressurized)

Cruising getting closer to CYHY

On final approach to CYHY runway 14

Seconds before touchdown

TOUCHDOWN

Turning left to exit from runway 14 into taxiway A to taxi to gate

Arrived at gate

Finished dropping off passengers

Thank you for viewing. Please stay tuned for next exciting flight!!!

Aharon

Wow, you used a prop instead of a jet, how did it feel? :P

Nice Pics, Default FSX DC-3 with Buffalo Textures? did you use the Freeware Yellowknife and Hay River (if they are available for FSX?)

Blame on NWT ICE PILOT tv show. That hooked me on to fly the Buffalo prop planes to recreate world realism, and their ability to work in -30 degree weather impressed me!!!!

Yes I use freeware CYZF Yellowknife scenery that can be found on flightsim and avsim. As for CYHY Hay River scenery, there is great freeware scenery available new since 2 months ago but I have to ask the software designer if it can work in my FSX without Ontario softwares.

If you want more tour of freeware CYZF scenery, look at my other screenshot report called IN HONOR OF GREAT CANADIAN PILOT.

Regards,

Aharon

I worked up there in the 80s and 90s (6.5 years winter and summer) and they didn't do much flying at -30, we had many grocery and fuel planes
that didn't show up in the camps north of Yellowknife because of the cold. It's just a show, they have to
make it exciting or it wouldn't be on TV. If half the stuff happen on the show really happened, Transport Canada
would have shut them down. Ya shit happens but not enough to keep the show exciting.
AT -35 it would take me a good hour of pre-heating to get 1 engine and transmission warm enough to start,
battery was taken out every night to keep it warm. after removing the heat you have about 5 minutes to get a start
or it's back to square one.

Cal,

Thanks for interesting explanations. Are you referring to props or jets?? I am wondering because Pacific Western 737-200s operated in -41 degree weather in northern Canada and even landed on ice where a lake turned into 7 foot thick ice. Also, it seems never bothers Alaska Airlines' 737s flying to Deadhorse or Barrow airport where the temperature averages -30.

Regards,

Aharon

Props :) although the helicopters I was working on were the AS350, Bell 206 and the Hugh 500, all turbine engines. even Air Tindi and Ptarmigan Airways would rarely show up on the cold days.
