Im having a dilemma here!

I load the FSX 737-800 for a test flight, with a estimated fuel burn of 35000lb and im carrying 45648lb of fuel at startup. With full load MTOW. Flight planning I have 2250 miles, and I set my cruise alt at FL380, weather was good no headwinds.

Problem is it ran out of fuel 300 miles from destination. Engines at this altitude were burning 4000LB/hr each.

I crossed check my plan and weights, with a online system, Fuel Planner.Com and I should be good.

Any thoughts?

Maybe I should check that in the failures? Also check real world flight data and it should be able to do it.?

Headwinds?

Did a flight with the 738 CYHZ to Madrid once. Landed with a couple thousand lbs fuel left.
Return flight full load of fuel ran out of fuel about 400 miles short of YHZ due (I assumed) to headwinds. 8)

Hi Robert,
I found your question fascinating and thought I would research it a bit further. I think many of us don't realize how accurate
Flight sim can be at times, and forget to take into account the effect of the wind on our flightplan, myself included.
I have had a few similar incidents but not quite as serious as yours. Once did a flight from YHZ to YUL at 35000, and half way
through was wondering why it was taking so long. So I looked into my activesky settings and found I was battling a 100kt headwind.
Dropped down 10000 ft and I was on my way again.

I found some historical jetstream maps of the eastern pacific for May 16 2014 (I presume that the shocking nature of the outcome
of your flight caused you to post immedeatley) and this is what I found: http://virga.sfsu.edu/archive/jetstream ... c_anal.gif

I would have to say you ran into some wicked headwinds.

for current east pacific wind charts head here: http://squall.sfsu.edu/crws/jetstream.html
Archived maps: http://squall.sfsu.edu/crws/archive/jet_pac_arch.html

Regards,

Now that was an in depth reply!

Thanks Peter! Not only did you suspect the winds but backed it up with some real world data facts :)

Cheers!

Agree, almost has to be winds/jet stream at that altitude, etc.
