I am considering using 7-segment red LEDs to simulate the analog gauges on the overhead, but I hate it when digital displays jitter when the values change too often.

I found these 1.5" colour graphic LCDs on eBay. What do you think? Personally I prefer white gauges, I find it easier to read the text. And since this would be a LCD, backlighting is not an issue.

The math behind rotating that needle would be a challenge though.

Just a heads up on sourcing from China. There are times when they are better than eBay for small batches, rarely, but it happens.

16x2 character LCD:

China:
Image
1-9 pcs US$3.29; 500-999 pcs US$2.83; 1000-1999 pcs US$2.74; 2000-3999 pcs US$2.65.
This particular supplier accepts Paypal, no need for T/T (costs about $30 for small amounts).

eBay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hantronix-LCD-D ... 3f0cac39fa
US $19.95 + $2.00 shipping

Now even if you factor in shipping, brokerage fees and import taxes, China is going to cost a LOT less than eBay for 10 LCDs. Shoot, I could order 50 and turn around and sell some on eBay.

I start here for all parts from Asia:

EDIT: One thing about supplying by eBay, you are never guaranteed a steady and reliable source. You are guaranteed top quality from China as well as a wide variety of models.

Scroll down a bit and check all the LCD types and backlight colours available, and some are not even listed (like 8x1 yellow/green):

Finally got around to interfacing FS-X, Level-D 767, FSUIPC and Lekseecon; clicking one shows up on the other.

I just have to shove in USB code to 2 buttons for preliminary test.

Hmmmmm. It's not French, but it's not English either. WTH!? :(

Got some more work done on section 1 of the overhead:

Have to put logic behind the keypad and finalize the IRS display at top.

At least now I know how to get to the information and change values using VB 6.

Here's the definition from the manual:

Quote:
Yaw Damper Inoperative (INOP) Light
When the amber INOP illuminated the yaw damper is off or inoperative.

Slowly moving forward in R&D. Hit a snag when I moved my application onto a network PC. I hope to get it going soon (have a post up on a Lekseecon support forum). Being able to have this run on a gaming PC or a network PC would be the ideal design.

In the meantime, I still keep an eye out for what is on the market. A 6-pack annunciator goes for $65 CAD:

And here I am worrying about perfection, pfft. There's several of the details I am worrying about apparent on that product: light bleeding around edge, the text sheet is not cut straight. And that little thingy goes for 52 euros?

Holy cow, it's just a $3 micro-controller, tiny printed circuit, 6 Leds and a USB cable. The whole thing barely costs $5. Wow!

It's nice to see this, at least I know I'm in the right direction by targetting a low-cost all-inclusive solution. :)

I'm glad I have a ground crew, I'd be lost and insane if it weren't for a good ground crew. Believe me at the end of a day and if majority of flights where medical/SAR those darn instruments are the last thing I want to see at home. Just give a bottle of rum and a Cuban cigar and fire up FSX and relax :D
