From VATSIM:
http://www.vatsim.net/prc/prc-genlessio ... rocedures/

Quote:
When departing an airport and deciding who to contact look for controllers in the following order:
1.DEL (clearance delivery)
2.GND
3.TWR
4.APP
5.CTR

What happened to DEParture?

While it is possible to see the DEP controller at certain special events, it's generally not used in practice. The APP (Or approach) controller will usually wear both hats and provide both departure and arrival services.

It's just not busy enough on Vatsim to warrant splitting the two.

Hope that helps!

I remember reading the pilot/ATC procedures a long time ago but can't find it with the new sites. I'm not sure if I read that here or at VATSIM.

It outlines when and what pilots are supposed to communicate to ATC.

Like:
- request clearance for flight plan
- request runway for departure
- ready for p/b
- ready for taxi
etc

I've started working on a comprehensive Level-D 767 take-off and landing checklists and want to stuff that in the right place.

request taxi clearance. Atc will tell you your dep rwy - you don't have to request it unless there are special circumstances.

True, the first and last thing you will hear in your taxi instructions (in Canada) will almost always be the runway in operation (the later being usually a hold short instruction).
