Totally. That is the only thing stopping me from making a "sim". $$$$ I started building one then realized how much it would cost to complete. The wood is still in the basement, slowly getting used for other things I do have some cockpit parts that can't be re-purposed though... not sure what I'll do about them.

Things like this have made me think and re-think my approach to a home sim. I am definitely planning to get some of the modular stuff such as radios, mcp and an fmc - but doing the full surround is something, while enticing, I'm starting to think is a bit of a fool's errand.
What's more - whereas I was originally keen to build a 737, 767 or 787 cockpit - based on my habits nowadays (blind VOR/NDB without GPS or any tracking of any kind) I'm seriously thinking about a twin turboprop of some kind - far more engaging flying.

Multi-monitor setups make more sense now. I also wanted to go full-out with a custom cockpit, but you can only fly what the cockpit was designed for. There's no flexibility in gauges or controls. What about single props, dual-quad props, helos, twin jets, quad jets? Twin jets seems to be a very popular design, but they're screwed if they want to go for a ride in a 747 unless they double-up throttles, starters, fuel pumps, etc. My CH throttle quadrant is already able to fly quads (speed brake, flaps and 4 throttles). It's when you fly quad-props with individual feather and pitch controls that things get complicated (3 x 4 axis); you could probably use 3 CH throttle quadrants at the same time.

Nod to Robert, a very good point. A dedicated cockpit is a beautiful thing but it does tie you down.
Actually - it is for that reason that I am considering a quasi-generic turboprop cockpit because a lot of the instrumentation and controls are the same across many different models. With that I could flip the cockpit from anything starting with a Piper Warrior (fav spot in my heart thanks to BVC), Twotter, or Caravan Amphibian up to a King Air 350 or my tried-and-true Piper Cheyenne.
The choice gives you anywhere from 100-240 knots of speed and a reach of 1000 miles - not to mention the flexibility of flying into many more smaller (and more interesting) airports.
Oh and Cal -That's a triple-7 cockpit.
