I thought I'd start something where we can share our problems and solutions. Google is nice to use, but there's some pretty stupid suggestions out there. One guy suggested to delete the BOOT.INI file.
Version: 64 bit
Problem: Random BSOD with various errors, mostly Memory Management.
Solution: Reseat RAM; one bar had somehow "unclicked" itself from the motherboard on a PC that is never moved.
Other possibilities worth trying out: - shut down and clean all cooling fins. - lower overclocking to stock speeds on CPU and RAM.

Memory Diagnostics: Many out there use various utilities such as MemTest86. Win 7 has its own built-in tool that many ignore, (edit) with good reason. Details on Win7 tool here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/71 ... -tool.htmlREVIEW: Inconsistent results with Windows Memory Diagnostics (why am I not surprised). I've made a bootable CD with Memtest86 v4.20 and trying that now. It seems to be the standard software used on Google.

Good idea, I'll get on that as soon as Memtest finishes. I put in 2 new 1000GB drives, CHKDSK will take a while but is a necessity.
So far no errors with 3 RAM trying a different slot each time. I'm still getting random BSODs and can't get SP1 installed. Frustrating.
After that, I'm going to try a BIOS update. I've never done those and didn't like ISOs and such. But I had to do one for Memtest so I might as well get that updated too.
EDIT:
- All RAM passed MEMTEST.
- CHKDSK said all was good.
- BIOS update went normal.
- SP1 downloaded and installed, something it could not get through before (in process of rebooting now).

Rob, did you install the Windows XP Mode and Virtual PC stuff in order to install FS-X?
Or did you just go ahead and then use some sort of Run As Win XP toggle after installing?
And what about all the other old software?
Win 7 64bit didn't want me to install my old Nero cd burner software. I downloaded freeware Active ISO which worked great.

Fatal error C0000034 on reboot after installing SP1Everyone is drooling over a link in this thread: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... ac95c5f43dBut Windows hangs on all my PCs before that link loads completely: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/For ... 08e76df315So I used the solution on page 2 of this thread, it seemed easier than solution 1 of renaming and copying files (lots of room for user error): http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... 29b69544b7Rebooted normally and Windows reverted changes from SP1. So then I tried the end of the solution on page 1 to make sure things were cleaned up: - boot in safe mode and run CHKDSK /B. - run SFC /SCANNOW. EDIT: CHKDSK can back normal, normal reboot went well. EDIT 2: SFC came back with 857K of logfile: - repairing corrupted file due to hashes. - ignoring duplicate ownership. - moved files. - corrected hardlinks. Yeeesh...

Win 7 64bit, FS-X and SoftTH v2.06 alpha:
Make sure to download DirectX Redistribution Package (SDK) or else FS-X won't start and SoftTH won't make a log file.
REVIEW: The mouse doesn't work; there's no mention of a patch in the near future.

FINALLY! SP1 is installed properly.
CCleaner cleaned up a lot of deadwood in the registry (can't hurt).
Got these instructions somewhere: - boot in normal mode (actually, they said SAFEMODE but windows said to do it in normal mode). - insert installation disk. - execute SETUP.EXE from disk. - Select INSTALL. - Select GET IMPORTANT UPDATES. - Select UPGRADE.
Then I did all the windows updates EXCEPT service pack 1. Rebooted and updated SP1 alone.
Now hopefully the D3D9_34.DLL error I get in FS-X is gone too.
