I would think that this would impact the quality of company finances. Yes, the site will allocate xxx number of passengers for the flight. BUT, when you click the "Flight From VA" button, and the flight information is populated, you can CHANGE the number of passengers (PAX) in AutoVa to reflect the aircraft you're flying.
Let's say you select said "767" flight and import it into AutoVa... the PAX field may be set at, say 200, from the website.
But if I decided to fly the route in the 738, well, 200 people just aren't going to fit unless i stack them 2 deep in some places... so I'd change that field to a more realistic 140 to 150 passengers.
I'll make less money on the ticket sales, but also save money as I'll likely burn less fuel.
Conversely I can fly it with the 744 and change that value to 325 or so. The 744 is going to (probably) burn more fuel, but you'll also bring in more revenue from the tickets....
It's all part of good flight planning! :;):

Oh I agree.
I'm just wondering how many are bothering to do that, or are even aware that they can (and should).

Right on.
By the way, Robert, do you try to start a FP with a waypoint rather than an airway? I might have mentioned this before, but 1) my FMC won't accept an airway on the top line, and 2) when I start with an airway in the VATSIM FP, I usually get told, after departure vectors, to go Direct to some point which I don't know where it is. Because I have the waypoint, ATC assumes I have all the points on that waypoint, and that can result in some scrambling.

Because I have the waypoint, ATC assumes I have all the points on that waypoint, and that can result in some scrambling. Usually I try to start with a waypoint; unless it's so far away that a victor will be helpful to finding it in the built-in FS planner (that thing just sucks, no search feature). But sometimes I forget to do that (like in these last batches).
If I start with an airway, just ignore it if it causes you pain in your way of doing stuff. I put it there to help you, so you know which way to continue after you cross a waypoint. I haven't figured how to use them in LDS767 yet (I think I have to be in the LEGS panel and not the basic ROUTE panel, haven't bothered yet).
As for the 1st waypoint, I try to pick one that is close after a SID (when possible) in the general direction I'm heading out. Of course all things are relative, the wind might force you to take off 180 deg around and you have to toodle your way back around to that 1st waypoint.
As always, everyone is free to use whatever flight plan they want, it's just a suggested flight plan. Some have personal preferences, some like to download from some sites and some just want something reasonable for download from CVA. Not everyone has the same AIRAC, so right there you're going to get conflicts every once in a while, let alone the differences between FS9 and FS-X.
I try to make a flight plan that goes in the straightest line possible while following airways; victors on take-off and approach, jetways during flight. But there are always exceptions, there just isn't airways for every possibility.
I am against the new way of flying; airport to airport. It removes any fun in flight simming, just like the new Airbus; point the joystick and let the airplane decide everything.
I do make one assumption when I make flight plans, and that is that you have access to charts for those airports if need be. Right now I'm using AIRAC 1004 and I got some differences between FS Commander and FS-X SIDs and STARRs.
(coming up, St Maarten to local Carribean, soon...)
EDIT: One more thing, it takes me quite a while to come up with new routes. This is my routine:
- select bunch of possible routes in a text file. - come up with routes in FS Commander, select decent SIDs and STARRs when appropriate. - note distance and time, calculate ticket price using spreadsheet. - re-enter routes in FS-X using LDS-767 FMC to double-check waypoints, SIDs, STARRs and for typos.
- re-format text file for upload. - upload to DEV site. - spot check on DEV site for screw-ups.
- back-up MAIN site schedule. - upload text file to MAIN site and keep LOG. - spot check on MAIN site just in case.
So it takes me several hours before I get a dozen new routes up there.

I do look forward to that. I like the idea of cargo haulings from TNCM to every single Caribbean country island using class 2 and class 3 planes:):):)
I think TJSJ would be better as staging point for all flights to all Caribbean countries.

Still lots of work to do and nothing written in stone (airports may be removed if they cause me grief in FS Commander or FS-X).
Preview of class 4 routes in and out of St Maarten:
Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe San Juan, Puerto Rico Ft De France, Martinique Vieuxfort, Saint Lucia Barbados, Barbados Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic St Georges, Grenada Port Of Spain, Trinidad And Tobago Aruba Island, Aruba Port-au-Prince, Haiti Providenciales I, United Kingdom Montego Bay, Jamaica Norman Manley, Jamaica Bermuda Is, Bermuda Nassau, Bahamas
St Maarten was chosen for the wow factor, not for efficiency or any other reason. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6685013493274016731#
I'm expecting material delivery tomorrow so don't hold your breath. But once the concrete is poured I won't be able to work on it for 7 days so I'll most likely get back in this (or online racing).
