Cessna C208 Grand Caravan (class 1)

With sales exceeding the 1000 mark the useful Caravan is a popular utility workhorse worldwide.

Design work for the Caravan dates back to the early eighties. First flight of a prototype occurred on December 9 1982 and certification was granted in October 1984. When production began the following year it became the first all new single engine turboprop powered aircraft to achieve production status.

The Caravan I has had a close association with US package freight specialist Federal Express (FedEx), on whose request Cessna especially developed two pure freight versions. The first of these was the 208A Cargomaster (40 delivered), the second was the stretched 208B Super Cargomaster (260 delivered). The first Super Cargomaster flew in 1986 and features a 1.22m (4ft) stretch and greater payload capacity, including an under fuselage cargo pannier. FedEx's aircraft lack cabin windows.

Boeing 727 (class 3)

The 727-100 had been in service barely a year when Boeing began serious consideration of a stretched, greater capacity development.

This resulted in the 727-200, which Boeing announced it was developing in August 1965. The 200 series was essentially a 100 series with a 20 ft fuselage stretch. This increased maximum seating to 189 passengers. The 727-200's stretch consisted of two 10 ft. plugs, one forward and one rear of the wing. Otherwise the two versions shared the same engines, fuel capacity takeoff weigtht.

The first flight of 727-200 occurred on July 27, 1967, with certification granted in late November of that year. The 200 entered service with Northeast Airlines (later aquired by Delta) the following month, by which time total 727 orders for both models exceeded 500

While no longer used for passenger service, many 727's were converted for use as private jets (Donald Trump has one) and Freighters.

Boeing 757-200F (class 3)

The 757 was launched in 1983 by Eastern Airlines and British Airways to replace the aging 727. 1,050 aircraft had been delivered by 2005 when the assembly line was shut down. Over 1000 aircraft remain in passenger service today.

While the program was resounding success, dwindling sales in the late 90's forced Boeing to cease production of the aircraft. Originally designed to replace the 727, the plane began as a stretched "-300" series 727. The program eventually evoled into a completely new design, early concepts featuring a "T-tail". Ultimately, a conventional tail design was adopted. The 757 retains the same upper-fuselage dimensions as the 707/727/737 series aircraft.

The 757-200F frieghter version proved to be a very popular model after it was launched in 1987 by UPS. Many other carriers, including FedEx and DHL use the model as well. This version has no passenger windows or doors and a large Cargo door is installed. Up to 15 containers or pallets can be accomodated on the main deck. The two lower holds provide 1,830 cubic feet of space for bulk loading. These provide a combined maximum revenue payload of 87,700lbs. At max. load, the -200F has a range of about 2,900nm.

De Havilland Canada Dash 7 (class 1)

In the 1960's, de Havilland Canada was already well known throughout the world for their series of high-performance STOL aircraft, noteably the very popular Twin Otter. However these aircraft were generally fairly small and served outlying routes, as opposed to the main feederliner routes which were already well served by larger, higher performance aircraft such as the Jetstream and Fokker F27.

De Havilland Canada felt they could compete with these designs in a roundabout way. With their excellent STOL performance, their designs could fly into smaller airports that other aircraft could not easily use.

The original specification called for a 40 seat aircraft with a fairly short range of 200 statute miles, operating from runways only 2,000 feet long.

With new noise restrictions in the '70's, an aircraft tailored for this role would have to be very quiet. To meet this need, the new design used oversized propellers geared to spin at a slower speed then normal. Much of the sound from a prop is generated at the tips which are spinning at near the speed of sound. By reducing the RPM of the prop, the noise goes away. The Dash 7 often landed at only 900 rpm and took off at only 1200!

Development started in 1972 and the prototype first flew March 27th 1975. The launch customer, Rocky Mountain Airways took delivery on Feb, 3rd, 1978. 113 Aircraft were delivered by 1988, before the design was superceded by the Dash 8.

McDonnell Douglas MD-11 (class 5)

The MD-11 is a modernised, slightly stretched and re-engined development of the DC-10 trijet.


Launched on December 30 1986 (following a launch order from British Caledonian for three placed earlier that month), the MD-11 was the result of a two year study to find a replacement for the DC-10. First flight occurred on January 10 1990, certification was granted in November that year, and the first one was delivered on December 7 1990 to Finnair.

Compared to the DC-10, the MD-11 features a 5.71m (18ft 9in) fuselage stretch, winglets, modified tail with less sweepback, an advanced two crew six screen EFIS flightdeck, restyled main cabin interior and new engine options. Variants offered were the longer range MD-11ER available from early 1996, MD-11F freighter, MD-11C Combi and MD-11CF convertible passenger/freighter models.

Boeing 767-300F (class 4)

Designed to be a fuel effecient, Medium to short range twinjet, the 767 series began production in the early 80's. Featuring new turbofan engines and an advanced flight control computer, the aircraft has been hugely successful in the medium range and transcontinental roles. Able to takeoff at maximum weight on only ONE engine, she's a virtual rocket with both running. Handling and acceleration are described as "fighter-like" by many pilots. Her smaller cousin, the 757, is virtually identical to the 767 in the flight deck, making it very easy for a pilot to transition to either aircraft. Data that follows if for the 767-300 series.

De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter (class 1)

A 20 passenger, STOL feederliner and utility aircraft, the Twin Otter is often called the most successful aircraft program in Canadian history.

The ability to fit the aircraft with wheels (fixed tricycle), floats, skis or as an amphibian, combined with STOL capabilities and a phenomenal climb-rate, means there is nowhere a Twin Otter can't go. In fact, when a researcher in Antartica had to be medivaced to safety, the Twin Otter, designed with Canada's Arctic cold in mind, was the only aircraft capable of accomplishing the mission. The aircraft is used as a regional airliner, cargo carrier, air ambulance, and skydive platform world-wide.

BAE - 146-200 Quiet Trader (class 2)

A medium sized commercial aircraft manufactured in England by British Aerospace, it is widely known as the "whisper jet" due to it's very quiet operation. For this reason, the aircraft is popular on routes into small city-based airports.

Production ran from 1983 until 2002. An improved version known as the Avro RJ began in 1992. The aircraft carries it's four jet engines on a high wing above the fuselage and has the distinction of being the only civilian commercial jet to do so. Possessing STOL capabilities due to it's very large flaps and spoilers as well as it's large, split "clam-shell" speed brakes, the -146/Avro RJ is well suited to the small runways in more remote cities.

There are problems with the aircraft, however. The ALF 502 turbofans were derived from Lycoming's helicopter turboshaft design and suffered from significant reliability problems. Internal electronics were prone to overheating which could trigger an automatic engine shutdown with no hope of in-flight restart. Certain atmospheric conditions caused engine failure due to internal icing. BAe mechanics have been known to quip that "BAe" stood for "Bring Another Engine". For this reason, many passenger versions are being phased out of service. The "Quiet Trader" freight version soldiers on, however, and will until a suitable replacement is found.
